According to the available reserves of hydropower resources, Russia ranks 2nd in the world after China. Its share reaches about 9% of the total global hydropotential.
In Russia, only 1/4 of the economic potential of hydropower resources has been developed. 80% of the undeveloped hydropotential is concentrated in the eastern regions (Siberia and the Far East), and 20% in European regions.
To date, the share of hydropower generation in the structure of Russia's generating capacity reaches about 20%, and the production of electricity based on hydro resources is about 18%.
The strategic importance of hydropower for the country's energy supply is reflected in a number of public decisions, including instructions from the President of the Russian Federation on approving the schedule for the construction of hydroelectric power plants in the territory of the Russian Federation, on the development of pump-storage power plants, on the development of a programme for the development of power capacities in the Far Eastern Federal District until 2050.
By 2025, according to the planned indicators of the first stage of the programme of supply agreement of renewable energy sources capacity, about 5.5 GW of RES generating facilities will be built in total, and by 2035 the total output of renewable energy generation capacity will exceed 13 GW.
The Government of the Russian Federation has supported the proposals of the Ministry of Energy of Russia and the Hydropower Association of Russia to increase the amount of financial support for the construction of small hydroelectric power plants.
It is planned to increase the share of renewable energy in the country's energy balance to 15% by 2030, to 50% by 2050.
